I knew absolutely zip about HeLa cells when I read this book. Not only do I rarely read non-fiction but I also don’t know anything about science short of Grade 11 Chemistry and Grade 10 Biology which frankly is wearing a little thin in my memory.
Rebecca Skloot explained the science without talking over my head and brings this story to life with the care and respect of a story told like her own. HeLa cells belong to a person. A real woman; and in this wonderful book she is given a voice whereas once she was treated like…well, a cell. Her story, told through her family, is a testament to being human, being a person, being black and being a woman - and as a woman taking ownership of our bodies as part of ourselves. All of this is not to mention, the racial and social issues that are ingrained in this story as it is revealed. This is an important book that everyone should read.
